When it comes to keeping food fresh, it doesn’t matter who it’s for – the important thing is making sure that it tastes great, day after day. Even more so when you’re paying for the best food available for your furry little friend!
We don’t yet offer Bundantbands for pet food storage containers, but as the queens of all things home organisation, and indeed storage container fanatics we sure know a thing or two about what to buy.
I’m sure you know about how to keep food fresh for you – bread bins and Kilner jars and the like (they even work for cleaning products) – but have you considered investing in a container for your furry friend’s kibble and tasty treats?
Well, read on my friend. You have come to the right place.
Aside from keeping it fresh, putting the food in its own container prevents bacteria, insects and any non-pet rodents out of the food.
You’ll also want a container that is made of glass, steel or food-grade plastic (ideally it will be BPA free).
2. What is the best container for pet food?
You want something airtight that will help retain the freshness of their food. You don’t like stale biscuits, and neither will your pet. An airtight container will also ensure that your house remains blissfully odour free, and means that they’ll only be able to smell it when you want them to!
The food type has an effect on the storage container, too. Wet food will need a silicon seal, and dry food can be placed in a glass or plastic container that clips shut. Follow the same rules you would for your food. Dry food in an airtight container to prevent staleness. Wet food in a sealed box (ideally silicon) in the fridge.
You’ll want to consider size as well – if you buy in bulk you’ll want a container that allows you to store all that food before it gets eaten. You could of course buy a smaller container to decant the big bag in the storeroom into.
Style isn’t something normally associated with pet food containers – but if you’ve got a smaller space, or you like to have the treat jar on the counter, ready for a well-behaved boy, it’s also something worth thinking about. There are plenty of options you’ll be happy to leave out in the open!
3. How should I store dry pet food?
In an airtight container. Ensure that you get something that’s large enough to keep the food in the packaging it came in, this will help keep it fresher, ensure it stays safe from contamination and make it much easier to clean!
If you would rather not, or want to decant a bigger bag into a container for weekly use, never refill the container with food when it’s nearly gone, as build-up from previous packets will start to collect and spoil.
4. How should I store wet pet food?
If it’s come in a can, you can cover it up with cling-film or pop it in some tupperware. You can also get silicone can covers which make it slightly less fiddly.
A quick note about wet food – if you’ve opened the can and got distracted before putting it in the fridge, if it’s been more than a couple of hours, it’s probably not worth risking and you should throw it away.
5. How often should you clean pet food containers?
Conventional wisdom suggests that plastic containers should be cleaned daily, and glass containers when they need to be refilled. This is because crumbs can get stuck in the pores of the plastic and over time this will start to cause issues with the healthiness of the rest of the food you put in there.
Finish all the food in the container, wash it out and then refill it.
